Our aim as a school is to ensure that all of our children experience a rounded education, which is why we place such an importance on our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) curriculum. PSHE is considered with the same priority as the traditional core subjects because it is a fundamental in the building blocks of our children’s learning. At High Cliff Academy, we take great pride in the quality of our PSHE teaching and learning and strive for a deep and comprehensive programme of learning to ensure we are continually meeting the needs of our children.
PSHE is a subject through which our children pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help our children to take control of their own lives in an informed and positive way by learning to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. Through teaching PSHE to a high standard we aim to help pupils to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life.
A well-crafted PSHE curriculum helps pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. We want to use our PSHE curriculum to empower our children to make responsible decisions about all aspects of life from managing their own mental health to responding to peer pressure. Our PSHE lessons help our children to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up by teaching them in an explicit and instructional way.
Placing a priority on our PSHE curriculum is evidence based and there is a growing body of research shows that children who are emotionally healthy achieve more whilst at school. PSHE education aids our children to achieve their potential by supporting their wellbeing and tackling issues that can affect their ability to learn, such as anxiety and unhealthy relationships. It also helps them to develop skills and aptitudes - like teamwork, communication, and self-regulation which are crucial to navigating the challenges and opportunities of the modern world.
